The violence against Hindus in Bangladesh shows no signs of abating. Once again, hatred attempted to claim a life. In Shariatpur area, a Hindu man named Khokon Chandra was surrounded by a mob. He was brutally beaten, stabbed with knives, and then doused with petrol in an attempt to set him alight.
In a last moment of desperation, the merchant Khokon Chandra saved himself by leaping into a nearby pond. However, this attack underscores the severe extent of persecution faced by minorities in Bangladesh.
According to reports, this cruel attack happened on Wednesday (December 31) around 9:00 PM in Tiloi area of Kaneshwar Union. Khokon Chandra Das (40), son of Paresh Chandra Das, owns a pharmacy in the Keurbhanga Bazaar of Damudya. Having closed his shop Wednesday night, he began his journey home. Upon reaching the Tiloi area, a group of assailants stopped him, attacked him with sharp weapons, and then poured petrol on his body to set him on fire.
To escape the blazing flames, Khokon Chandra Das jumped into a nearby pond. Later, residents rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
This incident has sent waves of terror through the area. The motive behind the attack and the identities of those involved remain unconfirmed.
The Fourth Incident in Two Weeks
Prior to this, on December 18, 2025, in Bangladesh, Deepu Chandra Das was killed by a mob and his body set ablaze while tied to a tree, accused of blasphemy. On December 25, a mob beat Amrit Mondal to death; though the Bangladeshi authorities claimed that Mondal was a criminal, beaten because of extortion dealings.
Following that, on December 29, Bajendra Biswas (42) was killed by a gunshot during security duties in the Mehrabari area. The police arrested the suspect, Noman Mia (29), who claimed the shooting was meant as a joke.
Recently, attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have surfaced after a coup. Following Sheikh Hasina's departure from Bangladesh, groups of students held fierce protests, leading to Mohammed Yunus being appointed as head of the interim government. Yunus is a renowned Bangladeshi economist, social entrepreneur, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has issued several anti-India statements after assuming office.
