Tensions mount in Bangladesh, reaching a critical point. A day ahead of the highly-anticipated International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) ruling on ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League has called for a nationwide shutdown. The government, still headed by Yunus, has banned Awami League activities. Bangladesh stands on high alert ahead of this pivotal decision.

In a heartfelt audio message, Sheikh Hasina urged party workers to intensify their efforts in the street protests, strengthening their movement.

Reports emerged of handmade bombs exploding late Sunday evening in Dhaka. Two such bombs detonated near interim government advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan's residence around 9 PM, with another explosion reported in the vibrant Karwan Bazar area. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali has instructed officers to open fire on any individuals inciting violence, particularly those targeting the police. Security has been heightened throughout Dhaka ahead of Monday's court ruling.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is expected to deliver its verdict on charges against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. These charges relate to crimes against humanity committed during the tumultuous student-led protests in July and August. Deliberations concluded on October 23rd.

The Awami League has called for a shutdown

Sunday morning saw Bangladesh enveloped in an unusual calm. Streets, usually bustling with activity, witnessed decreased traffic. Stores opened slowly, while many opted to remain indoors. Concerns heightened as the Awami League declared a two-day nationwide strike.

Owing to restrictions on all party and affiliate activities by the interim government, Awami League leaders have resorted to social media for announcements from undisclosed locations.

Sheikh Hasina's charges pertain to accusations of crimes against humanity, stemming from the violent, student-led protests which rocked Bangladesh between July and August 2024. Hasina has staunchly denied all these allegations, maintaining her stance firmly.
