Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fiercely responded to AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal's declaration of his wish to get married again. Sarma suggested that if Ajmal wishes to tie the knot, he should proceed before the elections. Post-elections, a crackdown on multiple marriages will be enforced, with penalties including jail time for such acts. Ajmal confidently stated that despite his age, he is capable and strong enough to consider marriage once more.
When Ajmal attended an event, he retaliated to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain's remark, saying, "I may be aging according to Rakibul Hussain, but I still possess the vigor for marriage. Even if the CM prevents it, I have the courage to go through with it." On this, Sarma had commented, endorsing the marriage if it happens before the elections.
At another instance, Sarma added, "If invited to the wedding, I would certainly attend as it's not illegal yet. As per my knowledge, Ajmal currently has one wife. He is free to marry two or three more times, but right after the elections, we'll outlaw polygamy. The draft is ready. An invitation to us now is fine, but post-elections such actions will be illegal. I am not stopping it, but the law will take its course if played with."
Ajmal, on March 28, made a controversial comment highlighting his youthfulness and capability to marry again despite his advancing age. He had confidently labeled himself as a robust 'strong Ajmal' ready for marriage regardless of being over 74 years old.
Apart from political counterpoints, local Muslim leaders have criticized Ajmal's statement. A Congress leader and candidate for the Lok Sabha from Dhubri labeled it a 'third-class statement' and denounced his comments. Another leader, Zakir Hussain Sikdar, expressed astonishment over how a seasoned politician could make such remarks. Sikdar emphasized the sanctity of the month of Ramadan and Ajmal's age while urging him to focus on his familial duties.
