On Monday, November 17, 2025, a special MP/MLA Court sentenced senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam to seven years in prison. This ruling comes from a 2019 case involving the use of two different birthdates to obtain a PAN card. Following this decision, Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, sharing a photograph of Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam and wrote, 'Those intoxicated by power, crossing the threshold of justice and oppression, eventually fall into the hands of nature’s verdict, heading towards a grim end.'
On X, Akhilesh wrote, 'Those engulfed in power often think they are above justice, but nature’s law eventually catches up with them, and everyone witnesses the outcome.'
What did the court rule?
Special Magistrate Shobhit Bansal found both guilty after hearing evidence and witness statements. Prosecution officer Rakesh Kumar Maurya stated that they would review this decision and, if deemed insufficient, contemplate an appeal. When asked if Azam Khan and Abdullah would be immediately detained, Maurya confirmed, 'Yes, absolutely.'
What is the case about?
The case was filed in 2019 at the Civil Lines police station in Rampur by BJP leader Akash Saxena. Charges were pressed under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable documents), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471 (using forged documents), and 120-B (conspiracy).
According to the prosecution, Abdullah obtained a PAN card from the income tax department with a birth date of January 1, 1993, that matched his school certificates and high school records. The same date was recorded in his State Bank of India account as well.
The court said Abdullah acquired this fake PAN card 'in conspiracy with his father' and submitted it to official records.
Future actions
The prosecution has indicated that if the punishment is viewed as insufficient, they may consider appealing in a higher court. The legal process against both will continue, leading to their incarceration.
