In the midst of a contentious dispute surrounding Aurangzeb's tomb, a violent confrontation erupted between two groups in Nagpur's Mahal area on Monday evening. During this disturbance, rioters set several vehicles on fire, threw stones, and damaged public property, sparking fear among local residents. Many police officers were injured in the stone-pelting incident. Currently, the situation is under control, with authorities advising the public not to be swayed by rumors.

The situation in Nagpur is tense as a certain community hurled stones at the police. The police retaliated with tear gas. This violence followed allegations by Muslim organizations that members of some Hindu groups, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, burned a cloth with religious inscriptions during a protest. The protest sought the removal of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Sambhajinagar. Local authorities have deployed additional police forces and heightened security measures to manage the situation.

15 Police Officers Injured, 17 Arrests Made

Following the violent incident, 17 individuals have been detained. Approximately 12 to 15 police officers and 4-5 civilians sustained injuries due to stone-pelting. The police are taking action against the rioters and arsonists. Nagpur rural police have been called in for assistance, and cyber police are involved to curb rumor-mongering. Around 25-30 two-wheelers and 2-3 cars have been set on fire.

Stay Indoors Unless Necessary: Nagpur Police Commissioner

Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Singhal issued a statement confirming that the situation is currently peaceful. The commissioner stated that the violence occurred around 8-8:30 PM and reassured the public that only two vehicles have been confirmed to be set on fire with stone-pelting incidents under comprehensive police investigation. Identification and arrests of those involved in the violence are underway with Section 144 in effect. Citizens are advised to remain indoors and not take the law into their hands.

CM Fadnavis Urges for Peace

Amid the violent clashes in Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed for peace. He encouraged citizens to lend their full cooperation to the administration, reiterating that they are in constant communication with police authorities.

Gadkari Urges Against Heeding Rumors

Union Minister and Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari stated that religious tensions in Nagpur have erupted due to certain rumors. Known for its history of peace, he urged all citizens not to heed rumors and to maintain calm. He assured that the government would take action against those involved in wrongdoing or illegal activities, reiterating that the Chief Minister has already been informed about the situation.

Additional Personnel Deployed in the Area

Witnesses reported that damage to public property and vehicle fires occurred when the situation escalated. Videos from the scene depict burning vehicles and debris strewn across the area. The police arrived promptly after the clashes began to halt violence and restore order. Additional personnel have been deployed to prevent any further unrest.
