It has been over a year since the assassination of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad. Now, his $6.8 million (50 crore INR) worth of unclaimed property has been transferred to the state government. This property was acquired using funds from illegal activities. District Government Advocate (Criminal) Gulab Chandra Agrahri revealed that Atiq Ahmad bought 2.377 hectares of land under the name of mason Hub Lal, using proceeds from crime. Atiq had assured that he would transfer the land to his name when required.

According to the agency, Agrahri mentioned that this property was confiscated by the Police Commissioner's Court under Section 14 (1) of the Gangster Act, giving three months to file a response. However, no evidence regarding ownership was presented by the concerned party. Consequently, the Police Commissioner's Court sent the case files to the Gangster Court of Prayagraj. On Tuesday, Judge Vinod Kumar Chaurasia deemed the Police Commissioner's actions fair and just, transferring the seized property to the government.

The police uncovered during the investigation against Atiq Ahmad conducted under the Gangster Act that he had property registered in the name of Hub Lal in the Airport Police Station area. Hub Lal revealed that in 2015 Atiq coerced him into transferring this land under threat. The police confiscated the land in November 2023.

Atiq Ahmad was murdered last year on April 15. In the Umesh Pal murder case, the police had taken Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf into custody last year. On the night of April 15 in Prayagraj, around 10 PM, three assailants disguised as journalists—Arun Maurya, Sunny, and Lovelesh Tiwari—shot and killed both brothers while they were being taken for a medical checkup by the police.
