Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, known for delivering memorable music in numerous acclaimed Bollywood films, believes he hasn't been receiving work in Bollywood for the past eight years. He attributes this to 'communal angles' and the shifting 'power dynamics'. This statement has sparked a debate within the industry, drawing a reaction from eminent lyricist Javed Akhtar.
Rahman's statement about not getting work has incited a fresh debate across social media and Bollywood circles. Addressing the controversy, Javed Akhtar has broken his silence, outrightly dismissing Rahman's claims. Akhtar believes that Rahman still holds the same respect in the Mumbai film industry as before, suggesting other reasons behind Rahman's absence in Bollywood.
Javed Akhtar Responds to Rahman
Javed Akhtar shared his thoughts on Rahman's claims during an interview with news agency IANS. He said, 'While residing in Mumbai and interacting with industry folks, I have never felt any discrimination. Everyone in the film industry admires Rahman's talent and holds him in high esteem. I disagree with the talk of any communal elements or discrimination.'
Akhtar also pointed towards a practical aspect, suggesting that perhaps people are hesitant to approach Rahman due to his perceived unavailability in India. The lyricist said, 'People may feel that Rahman has gotten engrossed with Western projects and his international shows. His events are massive, requiring significant time. Filmmakers might think he wouldn't be able to allocate time for Bollywood.'
Akhtar also highlighted that A.R. Rahman's stature is now very high. He explained that often producers making low-budget films hesitate to approach Rahman, thinking such a renowned musician might not consider working on their smaller films. Nonetheless, Akhtar assured that Rahman is approachable and would surely respond if anyone contacts him. He suggested people should not hesitate to meet him.
Reactions from Other Celebrities
Not only Javed Akhtar but other industry celebrities are also reacting to Rahman's statement. Singer Shaan commented, 'There is no communal aspect in the music industry and appealed to everyone not to overthink this matter.'
What Did A.R. Rahman Say?
In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman mentioned, 'In the last 8 years, perhaps there's been a change in power and those who aren't creative are making decisions. There may be a communal aspect, but no one has said anything upfront. Yes, there are whispers like we booked you, but another music company funded the film and brought in their composer. I just say, okay, I’ll relax.'
