AR Rahman's statement about the lack of work opportunities in Bollywood has sparked a storm. The music composer expressed concern over not receiving ample work, attributing it to what he described as a 'communal issue.' Singer Shaan, in response, has offered his take on the matter. In an interview with a news agency, Shaan dismissed the notion of a communal angle in the music industry, urging everyone to focus on creating quality music instead of overthinking the matter.
What Did Shaan Say About Rahman's Comments?
Singer Shaan remarked, 'When it comes to not getting work, I'm in the same boat. Despite having sung extensively over the years, there are times I'm not selected either. I don't take it personally because it's a matter of preference. If there was any real issue at play, I don't believe there is a communal or minority angle in music.'
He further elaborated, 'The music industry doesn't operate that way. If it did, our three superstar performers from minority communities wouldn't have thrived over the past three decades. That's not the case. Focus on doing good work, create good music, and don't overthink these things.'
Shaan explained that producers select singers based on the song's requirements, stating, 'People have their own perspectives, and they will always be divided. There's no rule that everyone must share the same opinion. Nevertheless, it shouldn't be given undue importance, as there's a rationale behind every song. Decisions are made based on that vision by composers or producers. Some will agree, others will object. Why get entangled in this? There's no benefit in doing so.'
Shobhaa De Calls It Dangerous
In addition to Shaan, author Shobhaa De also weighed in on Rahman's remarks. She told the same news agency, 'This is a very dangerous comment. I'm unsure why he said that. You should ask him directly. But after observing Bollywood for over 50 years, it's a place free from communal tensions. If you possess talent, opportunities will come your way. Without talent, religion won't be a hindrance. Given his immense success and maturity, he perhaps has his reasons, but you must ask him to understand.'
What Did Rahman Actually Say?
In an interview with BBC Asian Network, AR Rahman was questioned about any discrimination faced in Bollywood due to being a Tamil musician. He said, 'Perhaps I haven't noticed it. Perhaps it's God's way of shielding me. In the last eight years, especially with a shift in power, there may be a hint of communal bias. However, it doesn't confront me directly.'
Continuing, Rahman mentioned, 'No one ever brings it to my face. Through whispers and indirect hints, I've heard I was booked, but later, the music company brought in five other composers. I take it positively, as it allows me more family time. I'm not chasing work. I believe work should find me, based on merit. I receive what I deserve.'
