Donald Trump seems to be edging towards a war mode with Iran. On Monday, January 12, 2026, the U.S. State Department issued an emergency security alert directing all American citizens to evacuate Iran immediately. This decision follows two intense weeks of violent protests and lethal government crackdowns, with reports of over 500 deaths and thousands detained.

The U.S. government has warned its citizens, especially those with dual nationality, of the severe risks of arbitrary detention, interrogation, and harassment. The Iranian government has shut down internet and mobile networks nationwide, severely disrupting communication.

Faced with numerous international airlines canceling flights until January 16, the United States has advised its citizens, if possible, to leave via road through Armenia or Turkey.

Risks Loom for Dual Nationals

The American administration indicates that the Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality (U.S.-Iranian). Consequently, these individuals may be treated strictly as Iranian citizens under local laws. Displaying a U.S. passport or showing any ties to America could lead to arrests. There is no American embassy in Iran, making governmental assistance nearly impossible for those in distress.

Dark Times: Internet Blackout and Cancelled Flights

In an effort to quell protests, Iran has imposed a complete internet ban. According to Amnesty International, this blackout seems intended to conceal human rights abuses. The ensuing chaos has led major airlines like Lufthansa, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways to limit or cancel services. Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport is nearly isolated, complicating the evacuation for travelers.

On the Brink of Conflict: America's Options

President Donald Trump has not ruled out military intervention against the protest crackdown. The White House suggests that if Iran crosses any 'red lines,' America may respond with aggressive military measures. U.S. citizens are advised to steer clear of protests, maintain sufficient food and water supplies, and seek refuge in safe locations.
