In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, an Air India plane crash has unfolded with some terrifying live images. The plane was carrying 242 people, including 12 crew members (two pilots included) and 230 passengers. Shortly after the incident, Air India posted an update on social media platform X.
Air India stated that the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flight AI171 encountered an accident on 12 June 2025. As of now, we are gathering more information and will provide the latest updates on http://airindia.com and our X handle (https://x.com/airindia) as soon as possible.
It has been reported that a Boeing 787 Dreamliner was involved in the Air India crash. This isn't the first crash involving Boeing aircraft. Numerous prior crashes have occurred. In 2024, a Boeing crash in South Korea resulted in nearly 180 deaths, involving a Boeing 737-800, a new version of the 737 Max model.
Crashed in 2018 and 2019
In a separate incident, a 737 Max lost a door plug mid-flight last January. Additionally, in 2018 and 2019, Boeing 737 Max crashes involved Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, forcing Boeing to halt this model, resulting in $30 billion in losses. These disasters claimed 189 and 157 lives, respectively. The Boeing 737-800 currently remains in operation.
What's Wrong with Boeing Aircraft?
With Boeing crashes mounting, an investigation into the 737 Max uncovered a problem linked to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). This system reduced reliance on manual landings, yet pilots weren't briefed comprehensively, leading to 346 passenger and crew member fatalities in 2018 and 2019. Operations were halted and resumed after updates, now operating as Boeing 737-800.
The Ahmedabad crash includes a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Its crash history is non-existent. The black box findings may shed light on the Ahmedabad incident.
Boeing Aircraft Warnings Preceded
This accident rekindles difficult questions about 787's safety, a plane with longstanding warnings. Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour has voiced concerns for 17 years over improperly joined fuselage sections, jeopardizing structural integrity. He claims forced piece fitting, raising flags since 2020, while Boeing told him to stay silent.
Former quality control engineer John Barnett warned that up to 25% of emergency masks could fail mid-flight. Challenged, he tragically passed in 2024, prompting his family to sue Boeing over related mental trauma. Mechanic Richard Cuevas, at a Boeing partner facility, reported 'substandard manufacturing' in 2023, which led to his dismissal.
Investigations Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) actively investigates these claims. Sam Salehpour's allegations prompted a 2024 FAA special audit, exposing flaws in Boeing's quality control and safety procedures. Boeing denies intentional safety compromises, asserting 787 safety and lack of immediate or long-term risks. This major accident has once again spotlighted Boeing.
Over 9,000 Lives Lost
, government data suggests Boeing planes have been involved in around 6,000 accidents and incidents globally, of which 415 were fatal, claiming over 9,000 lives. Among thousands of passenger planes worldwide, over 4,000 are Boeing 737-800. According to an NYT report, Asia, Europe, and North America are key continents using Boeing planes.
