Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has resigned from his post, announcing his BJP affiliation today, March 7. Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress has sternly criticized his decision. Speaking to India Today TV, Gangopadhyay detailed his reasons for entering politics, also addressing past allegations.
Gangopadhyay asserted, 'As a judge, I've never played politics. None of my decisions carried political bias, based solely on facts presented to me.'
'If corruption is egregious, a judge will do everything possible to have it investigated by the right agency. I've done just that, unbiasedly,' he explained.
Gangopadhyay, who often clashed with Trinamool Congress leaders, expressed surprise at the state's challenge to his rulings without labeling him political. 'They never raised these issues in appellate or Supreme Courts; now they do, to distract from corruption,' he said.
Clarifying his political stance, he revealed no initial plans to join any political party, mentioning, 'I thought to retire in 5 months, but when I saw challenges and political invitations, I decided to act.'
Discussing his recent political involvement, he shared, 'After my vacation ended, BJP contacted me via mutual friends. Our discussions lasted 3-4 days before I resigned.'
