In a major breakthrough, Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Police have apprehended a woman responsible for sending bomb threat emails across 11 states, including Gujarat, over the past year. The accused, Rainy Jo Silda, hails from Chennai and is currently employed as a senior consultant at a multinational company.
Plot Hatched to Frame Her Lover
Police investigations reveal that Rainy was in an unrequited love scenario and was mentally disturbed after her boyfriend married someone else. Driven by revenge, she created a fake email ID in his name and sent bomb threat emails to 21 locations nationwide. Among the targets were prominent sites like Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, schools, hospitals, and airports.
A Blame Game Unfolds
According to police sources, Rainy exploited secure platforms like the dark web and Proton Mail to avoid cyber detection while sending the threatening emails. She even created email accounts under a Pakistani alias and in her boyfriend 'Dwij's' name to redirect suspicion onto him.
However, a small technical oversight led to her downfall. The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell meticulously tracked her digital footprints and arrested her at her residence in Chennai.
Besides Gujarat, the woman sent similar threatening emails to Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Punjab. These emails repeatedly put police and security agencies on high alert and sowed fear among the general public.
Police sources stated that in 2021-22, she even created fake Instagram and WhatsApp accounts to harass her friends. Rainy confessed to the police that she had plans to continue sending threatening emails ahead of an upcoming Rath Yatra, had she not been apprehended.
