In the heart of India's capital, Delhi, the Municipal Corporation (MCD) launched a bold demolition drive near the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque at Turkman Gate on the night of January 6th and 7th, around 1 AM. Over 30 bulldozers arrived to dismantle illegal constructions that had emerged around this iconic site.

This drive stirred strong opposition from the local community, leading to a gathering of crowds. The situation escalated when some individuals reportedly resorted to stone-throwing at the police officers. To manage the evolving scenario, additional police forces were deployed on-site.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, five officers sustained minor injuries during the operation. Investigations are underway to identify and take action against those responsible for the disruptions.

The demolition affected a section of the baraat ghar (community hall) near the mosque. Furthermore, illegal structures including a baraat ghar, two shops, and three dispensaries were dismantled in the vicinity.

The lead-up to the removal of illegal constructions outside the mosque had been fraught with tension for several days. The matter eventually reached the court, which placed a stay order with a decision expected by January 22nd. The interim action has fueled anger among locals who see it as premature.

Tensions soared in parts of Old Delhi as soon as dismantling activities commenced near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque, prompting protests from the local populace.

As citizens began protesting, the police force present responded with tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police for the Central Range, elaborated, "During the operation, some attempted to disrupt proceedings by throwing stones. The situation was quickly controlled through minimal force, restoring calm without further tension."

Given the circumstances, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory warning of potential congestion on several major roads. Areas around Ramlila Maidan are expected to experience traffic disruptions as the demolition continues.

The advisory intimates possible traffic jams on JLN Marg, Ajmeri Gate, and Minto Road due to the operation.

Heavy traffic is anticipated on Delhi Gate, BSZ Marg, and NS Marg until the demolition work concludes. Commuters are advised to avoid these routes unless necessary and consider alternate roads.

Certain routes will remain completely closed to traffic. The stretch from Kamla Market Roundabout to Asaf Ali Road near Hamdard Building will be inaccessible.

Vehicle movement from Kamla Market Roundabout to JLN Marg and from Delhi Gate to JLN Marg will also be restricted. Additionally, the path from Mirdard Chowk to Guru Nanak Chowk along Maharaja Ranjit Singh Marg will stay closed until the demolition is complete.

As per agencies, several coordination meetings were held with Aman Committee members and other local stakeholders before the tear-down campaign began to ensure due diligence.
