The election results in India's capital, Delhi, are out. BJP has secured a dominant majority with 48 seats, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been reduced to just 22 seats. Under the tidal wave of BJP's success, AAP finds itself in a complete wipeout. Notably, AAP's leader Arvind Kejriwal couldn't save his seat, losing to BJP's Parvesh Verma in New Delhi. Other prominent party figures such as Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Somnath Bharti also faced defeat. Let's take a look at the five seats where the victory margin was less than 5,000 votes.
1. Kejriwal Lost from New Delhi Seat
Starting with AAP's chief, Arvind Kejriwal. He contested from the New Delhi assembly seat against BJP's Parvesh Verma and Congress' Sandeep Dikshit. Although a triangular contest, it was clear whom the people favored. The electorate of New Delhi cast their trust in Parvesh Verma, resulting in Kejriwal's defeat by 4,089 votes, while Sandeep Dikshit lost by a wider margin of 25,520 votes, managing to secure only 4,568 votes.
2. Manish Sisodia's Narrow Loss in Jangpura
Ex-Deputy CM of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, had been embroiled in the liquor scandal, leading to his incarceration. This time, he chose to contest from Jangpura instead of his traditional Patparganj seat. However, Sisodia was defeated by BJP's Tarvinder Singh Marwah by 675 votes.
3. Saurabh Bhardwaj's 3188 Vote Loss in Greater Kailash
Saurabh Bhardwaj, a minister in the Delhi government, contested from Greater Kailash but lost by 3,188 votes. BJP candidate Shikha Roy won the seat with a total of 49,594 votes, while Congress candidate Garvit Singhvi ended up with a total of 6,711 votes, losing by 42,883 votes.
4. Durgesh Pathak's Loss in Rajendra Nagar by 1231 Votes
AAP fielded Durgesh Pathak from the Rajendra Nagar assembly seat. Despite efforts, he lost as BJP's Umang Bajaj secured a win by 1,231 votes, accumulating a total of 46,671 votes while Pathak received 45,440 votes. Congress held the third position, with Vineet Yadav earning a total of 4,015 votes.
5. Somnath Bharti's Defeat in Malviya Nagar
In the BJP wave, AAP was completely overpowered. AAP leader Somnath Bharti contested from the Malviya Nagar assembly with a direct face-off against BJP's Satish Upadhyay. Unfortunately, Somnath Bharti lost by 2,131 votes. He garnered a total of 37,433 votes while Satish Upadhyay secured 39,564 votes. Here, too, Congress took the third spot, with Jitendra Kumar receiving a total of 6,770 votes.
