Congress Headquarters Relocates
The Congress headquarters is now shifting to a new building. Until now, the office was situated at 24 Akbar Road, where it operated for 47 years. It has now been moved to the newly constructed Indira Gandhi Building at 9A Kotla Road, a project that took nine years to complete.
140 Years of Congress History on Display
Upon entering the new Congress office at 9A Kotla Road, key principles from the nation's Constitution that embody democracy, nationalism, secularism, inclusive development, and justice are prominently inscribed.
The Entrance and Reception Area
The reception area features portraits of both the first and current presidents of Congress. As visitors enter, they are greeted with a photo of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar along with an inspiring quote. To the left on the ground floor, a state-of-the-art press conference room is established. In the center lies the reception, with a canteen directly behind it.
Soundproof Chambers for Discussions
On the left side, the building houses the media office of the Congress with small soundproof chambers designed for TV debates. Adjacent is a seating area dedicated for journalists and cameramen.
President's Chamber in the New Building
On the first floor, there is a high-tech auditorium for special programs. The building accommodates several departments, including the farmer and data departments. The offices of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) officials are spread across the second, third, and fourth floors. On the fifth floor, the offices of former presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and central to this is the office of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
A Nine-Year Architectural Journey
This five-story building, completed between 2016 and 2025, is designed to be eco-friendly. Notably, 1% of the construction budget supported municipal toilet projects as part of community service.
A Timeline of Congress' Rich History
The walls of the building narrate the Congress' significant moments such as the journey to complete Swaraj, Gandhi's Dandi March, and the significant Bharat Jodo Yatra. Displayed with pride are images including a rare photograph of Nehru alongside Einstein, historical moments like the surrender of Pakistan under Indira Gandhi, the telecommunications revolution by Rajiv Gandhi, the globalization blueprint of Narasimha Rao, the leadership and sacrifices of Sonia Gandhi, the governance highlights of UPA 1 and 2, and memorable occasions with Dr. Manmohan Singh and Barack Obama.
47 Years at 24 Akbar Road
For 47 years, the Congress headquarters thrived at 24 Akbar Road. The rich history and legacy of the Lutyens-era bungalow are significant but now resign to a chapter of the past as the new Congress office sets roots on Kotla Road.
Site of Many Political Events
This historical site, erstwhile a major political hub, will no longer serve its previous role. The move to Indira Gandhi Building at Kotla Road signifies new beginnings. This 24 Akbar Road site witnessed notable political events and decisions. In 1961, it gained prominence when Dr. Khin Kyi, Myanmar's (then Burma) ambassador, resided here with her daughter Aung San Suu Kyi, who would later earn the Nobel Peace Prize and become a champion of democracy in Myanmar.
Depiction of Historical Events
The building is adorned with 246 historic images, reflecting Congress' 140 years of pride and including figures from the Nehru-Gandhi lineage and other esteemed leaders.
