Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi denounced the Indian government's silence on the ongoing Middle East conflict, describing it as a deviation from ethical and diplomatic values. She expressed her views in an article for The Hindu, titled 'It's Not Too Late to Hear India's Voice.'

Gandhi alleged that the Modi-led government, by deviating from India's long-standing, principled stance on Palestine, has lost both its voice and values.

India's Silence Raises Concerns

She wrote: “Devastation in Gaza and unprovoked attacks on Iran raise concerns over New Delhi's silence. It's more than silence; it's a departure from our moral traditions.” Gandhi insisted, “It’s not too late. India should take a firm stand, act responsibly, and use every diplomatic channel to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue in the Middle East.”

Gandhi stated that the unlawful and unconstitutional attack on Iran by Israel on June 13, 2025, illustrates the dangers of unilateral military action. The Congress Party has condemned such bombings and targeted assassinations strongly.

She added that Iran has been India's steadfast friend. Gandhi recalled how, in 1994, Iran helped block an India-opposing resolution on Kashmir at the UN Human Rights Commission, emphasizing the deep civilizational links between the two countries.

Targeting Netanyahu

Sonia Gandhi criticized Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, calling his leadership one that 'undermines peace and fosters extremism.' She also reproached former U.S. President Donald Trump's statements dismissing intelligence reports to claim Iran was nearing nuclear capabilities.

In conclusion, Sonia Gandhi appealed, “It’s not too late. India must voice its stance assertively, act responsibly, and utilize every diplomatic medium to foster dialogue restoration in West Asia.”
