In the midst of widespread protests in Iran, Social Media Platform X has undertaken a significant digital transformation, replacing the official Iranian flag emblem with the royal 'Lion and Sun' symbol, utilized before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Esteemed for its historical significance, this emblem was a cornerstone of Iranian royalty for centuries, embodying the nation’s classical national identity.
This alteration is prominently noticeable platform-wide, permeating even the accounts of the Iranian government and affiliated media outlets such as Tasnim News, which now display this antique royal symbol.
Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, confirmed that this update was implemented at the behest of a user request, with prior hints indicating their active consideration of this change.
Post-1979 revolution, the emblem was replaced with religious symbols and the Kufic script of 'Allahu Akbar'. In recent years, the royal symbol has predominantly been embraced by pro-monarchy groups and expatriates opposing the current regime. It's also being utilized in ongoing protests advocating for a monarchical return.
