After a brief respite on Monday, torrential rains wreaked havoc once more in Mumbai. Heavy showers have commenced in various parts of South Mumbai, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city until 8:30 AM on Tuesday, warning of significant rainfall.

Since the rain began on Sunday night through Monday morning, the city has witnessed near-flood conditions, and the relentless showers show no sign of stopping. As per the IMD, the last 24 hours registered unprecedented rainfall, shattering a 107-year-old record for May. Moreover, this rain ushered in the monsoon season earlier than it has in 75 years, with such an early onset having previously been recorded in 1950.

According to a PTI report, the southwest monsoon reached Mumbai 16 days earlier than its typical arrival date, which is around June 11, whereas last year, it arrived on June 25.
