Governments are making various efforts to save paper and protect the environment. However, these efforts often face challenges, sometimes from the lawmakers themselves. A recent case from Rajasthan highlights this issue, where iPads were installed in the Assembly to encourage paperless work.

Instead of embracing the technology, many legislators have chosen to use these iPads merely as paper stands. This negligence towards technology led to 4 iPads malfunctioning, prompting the Speaker to appeal to legislators to avoid such misuse.

Repair of Four Devices Required

The Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly, Vasudev Devnani, urged legislators in an appeal, 'New iPads have been installed at your seats. Please use them appropriately and not as paper stands. Out of the newly installed iPads, 4 needed repairs.'

'Placing Paper, Exerting Pressure on Screens'

Devnani mentioned, 'Some legislators are using iPads as stands for holding and reading documents. Despite repeated requests, the devices are not being used correctly. The iPads installed at four seats needed repairs due to papers being placed and pressure being applied on the screens.'

'Handle As if They Were Your Own'

He further admonished, 'Legislators are advised not to lock the iPads, connect phones, or use them as stands. Treat these delicate devices as if they were your own.'

Printers and Laptops Provided to Legislators

As part of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) project, aimed at making the Rajasthan Assembly's processes paperless and digital, iPads have been installed at all 200 legislators' seats. Additionally, legislators have been provided with laptops and printers for their residences. This initiative has seen an investment of 160 to 170 million rupees.
