India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, shed light on crucial aspects of the India-US trade deal. On Friday, he firmly asserted that India would not rush into agreements or bow to pressure.
He disclosed ongoing negotiations with the European Union and the United States, stressing that India is in no hurry to finalize deals. Speaking at the Berlin Dialogue in Germany, Goyal reiterated, 'Our talks with the European Union continue. While discussions with the US are underway, India does not hasten agreements or succumb to deadlines or external pressures.'
Exploring New Markets Amidst Tariff Challenges
Minister Goyal is in Berlin for high-level talks and emphasized the strategic long-term views necessary for any trade deal. India, according to him, does not make hasty decisions driven by impulse. Furthermore, addressing tariff issues, Goyal underlined India's efforts in discovering new markets as a strategic response to high tariffs.
Is India Negotiating on Its Own Terms?
When questioned about whether India is securing fair long-term trade agreements, Goyal confidently responded, 'I don't believe India has ever allowed anything other than national interest to dictate its friendships. If someone tells me to end ties with the European Union or stop collaborating with Kenya tomorrow, it won't be acceptable.'
Decision to Purchase Products—A Matter of Choice
Goyal asserted that the decision to purchase specific products lies solely with the nation entering into the trade deal. The world determines its product needs. His remarks hold significance as the US urges India to halt crude oil purchases from Russia.
Commitment to Fair and Excellent Deals: Goyal
Earlier, Goyal commented on the ongoing dialogue regarding the India-US deal, indicating positive discussions. He confidently stated that an agreement is imminent, promising a fair and excellent trade deal between both countries.
