The Uttar Pradesh State Women's Commission has unveiled a proposal aimed at shielding women from inappropriate touch and preventing any ill intentions by men. According to this plan, male tailors should refrain from sewing women's clothes and handling their hair. This initiative was tabled by Babita Chauhan, Chairperson of the State Women's Commission, and it received support from other members present at the meeting.

Following the Women's Commission's meeting on October 28, several recommendations were made. These include prohibiting men from measuring women's sizes and installing CCTV cameras in shops. As of now, this proposal awaits further action, with plans to request the state government to legislate on this matter. The enforcement of these women's commission guidelines will be the responsibility of the district administration.

Himani Agarwal, a member of the UP Women's Commission, explained to a news agency on Friday, 'A proposal was put forward at a recent Commission meeting to ensure that only female tailors measure women's clothing. Moreover, installation of CCTV cameras in shops was suggested.'

Himani Agarwal further stated, 'We have also emphasized that female barbers should exclusively serve female clients in salons. This is because we believe that men in these professions can sometimes lead to harassment of women. Some men may harbour ill intentions. However, it must be noted that not all men have such intentions.'

What did the Chairperson of the Women's Commission say?

In a conversation with 'Aajtak', Chairperson Babita Chauhan expressed that gyms frequented by women should employ female trainers, and all gym trainers must undergo police verification. In instances where a woman opts for training under a male trainer, she must give written consent.

The decision comes after the Commission received numerous complaints of harassment from women and girls who frequent gyms. The proposal also mandates that women's clothes should only be measured by female tailors in tailoring shops. Furthermore, it ensures the presence of female staff on school buses carrying girls. The Women's Commission has issued directives to all districts in this regard, and any non-compliance will lead to legal actions.
