The father of a Nepali student who tragically ended her life in the hostel of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has leveled serious allegations against the institution. He claims KIIT has been mistreating graduate students from neighboring countries. The deceased student's father, Sunil Lamsal, arrived in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday morning for the postmortem of his daughter's body at AIIMS.
The grieving father said, "I've lost my daughter. There are many students studying here. I've heard that some of them were expelled from their hostels. This isn't right. Such incidents shouldn't repeat. They go to Nepal, inviting students for studies but mistreat them." He expressed trust in the government and the police to deliver justice.
Student talked to mother before taking her life
He added, "I sent my daughter here for higher education. We hope the government ensures justice. We trust the government and police here for justice. We don't know how this incident happened. We were simply told to come quickly, and we did. Upon arrival, we learned our daughter was no more. We spoke with her before this incident, and she sounded normal, mentioning she was going to a fest and would talk after returning, but she was gone by then."
KIIT claims a romantic involvement
Meanwhile, KIIT released a statement saying, "It's suspected that the girl was involved romantically with a fellow student, which might have led her to take this step." Later, the institute apologized, stating, "We sincerely apologize for any wrong steps and warmly embrace affection towards Nepali students and people, urging them to return."

Apologies tendered by KIIT following pressure
KIIT stated their shock over the incident that occurred on the evening of February 16th on campus, expressing regret over the conduct of some staff towards protesting students. An official said, "The comments made by two of our officials were irresponsible and impulsive, which we do not endorse. We express remorse."
Brother's claim: Student was distressed by blackmailing
This incident gained traction when the deceased's cousin filed a complaint at Bhubaneswar's Infocity Police Station, alleging his sister was driven to hang herself in her hostel room on Sunday. He accused a university student of blackmailing her, which riled Nepali students into demanding justice through demonstrations.
Protesting students expelled from campus
Following this, KIIT expelled numerous Nepali students from hostels, leaving them at Cuttack railway station without travel arrangements. Students lamented, "We lack money for food, water, or train tickets." A student remarked, "We were asked to vacate our hostel room forcibly. We were left here against our will. Our exams were scheduled for February 28th."
