The tragic suicide of a Nepali student in the hostel of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has caused a significant stir. With the intervention of Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, the Nepalese embassy, Odisha government, and police are actively engaged. Police have arrested three university directors and two security guards on charges of student mistreatment.

The Odisha government has constituted a high-level fact-finding committee to investigate the matter. The committee comprises the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department, and Secretary of the Higher Education Department. They will examine the student's death and the misconduct experienced by protesting students. Essential measures have already been taken in the case.

Arrest Made on Cousin's Report

A case under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code has been filed at Infocity Police Station, Bhubaneswar against the accused, Advik Srivastava, based on the report of the deceased, Prakriti Lamsal's cousin, Siddhant Sigdel. He is currently in custody for questioning. Meanwhile, cases have been registered against KIIT security guards Ramakant Nayak (45) and Jogendra Behera under BNS sections 126 (2)/296/115(2)/3(5).

KIIT Hostel Official Apologizes

An official from KIIT hostel apologized for remarks made about Nepal during a student protest. They stated, "It was never my intention to offend anyone. I sincerely apologize if my words inadvertently hurt someone." Protesting students have called for the formation of an independent organization to safeguard their interests.

Family Demands Justice, "She was going to a fest," say Relatives

Having rushed to Bhubaneswar from Nepal upon receiving news of the incident, the relatives of the deceased student are seeking justice. They expressed, "We were unaware of how this happened. We were just told to come promptly and discovered here that our daughter was no more. She mentioned attending a fest, intending to speak with us afterward. Now she's gone."

Father of the Deceased Trusts Government and Police

Sunil Lamsal, the grieving father, shared, "We've lost our daughter. Many students are studying here. We learned some students were expelled from the hostel, which isn't right. This incident shouldn't recur. They invite students from Nepal to study here and then mistreat them." He trusts the government and police to deliver justice for his daughter's demise.

KIIT Claims Suicide Due to Love Affair

In defense, KIIT suggested that the student's suicide might be linked to a love affair gone wrong. The deceased's cousin alleged that another student was blackmailing her, escalating the situation.
