Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath on Sunday, marking his third consecutive term as the leader of the nation. Alongside PM Modi, 72 members of his cabinet also swore in their roles. Among these ministers, 33 are taking the oath for the first time.

In Modi's council, six former chief ministers have been included for the first time, featuring ex-leaders such as Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Madhya Pradesh, Manohar Lal Khattar from Haryana, and H. D. Kumaraswamy from Karnataka.

Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh,

Shivraj Singh Chouhan

, a five-time Member of Parliament from Vidisha, an esteemed constituency that witnessed the victories of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. Shivraj also holds the record for longest-serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Former pracharak (promoter) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),

Manohar Lal Khattar

, has served as Chief Minister of Haryana twice. He resigned from his position following the withdrawal of support by the JJP from the Haryana government.

Seven ministers from BJP's alliance parties have been included in Modi's cabinet for the first time. These include K. Ramamoorthy from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Chandra Shekhar Pemmasani, Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur from the Janata Dal United (JDU), Jayant Choudhary from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Chirag Paswan from the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and H.D. Kumaraswamy from the Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

Jayant Choudhary

, the national president of the RLD, is the grandson of the country’s fifth prime minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and the son of former Union Minister Ajit Singh. Jayant has previously allied with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party. Following the government's February announcement to posthumously award Chaudhary Charan Singh the Bharat Ratna, Jayant joined the NDA. Under his leadership, the RLD won two seats in Western Uttar Pradesh—Baghpat and Bijnor.

Son of one of Bihar's most influential leaders, Ram Vilas Paswan,

Chirag Paswan

has debuted as a minister in the central government, winning the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 1.7 lakh votes— a constituency his father had won a record nine times. Chirag's party, the LJP (Ram Vilas), fought the election in Bihar under the NDA and won all five contested seats.

Ram Nath Thakur, from the Janata Dal (United), son of the esteemed socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur—who was also awarded the Bharat Ratna this year—is considered close to Nitish Kumar. Prior to this, he served as a minister in the Bihar government from 2005 to 2010.

Grandson of Punjab's former Chief Minister Beant Singh,

Ravneet Singh Bittu

(48) is a refreshing addition to the central government. Before the Lok Sabha elections, Ravneet switched from Congress to the BJP and contested from the Ludhiana seat, though he was defeated by more than 20,000 votes by former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Prior to this, he represented the Anandpur Sahib seat from 2009 to 2014, and Ludhiana from 2014 to 2024.

Eknath Khadse's daughter-in-law,

Raksha Khadse

, has also sworn in as a central minister. She has consecutively won the Raver seat in Maharashtra three times and became the youngest MP in 2014. Her husband, Nikhil Khadse, reportedly committed suicide at the age of 37.

Jitin Prasada

was one of the youngest ministers in Manmohan Singh's government under the UPA. After a decade, Jitin has made his return to the central cabinet. He left Congress in 2021 and joined BJP. His father, Jitendra Prasada was the former vice-president of Congress.

Nitish Kumar's confidant,

Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh

has won the Munger Lok Sabha seat from Bihar. This marks his first inclusion in the central cabinet.

In addition, actor-turned-politician

Suresh Gopi

has made history. He has taken the oath as the first BJP parliamentarian from Kerala. It is his first time as a cabinet minister.

Other first-time BJP ministers in the cabinet include Kamlesh Paswan (Uttar Pradesh), Sukanta Majumdar (West Bengal), Durga Das Uikey (Madhya Pradesh), Rajbhushan Choudhary (Bihar), Satish Dubey (Bihar), Sanjay Seth (Jharkhand), C R Patil (Gujarat), Bhagirath Choudhary (Rajasthan), Harsh Malhotra (Delhi), V Somanna (Karnataka), Savitri Thakur (Uttar Pradesh),  Kamaljeet Sahrawat (Delhi), Prataprao Jadhav (Maharashtra), Kirtivardhan Singh (UP), Tokhan Sahu (Chhattisgarh), Bhupathi Raju Srinivas Verma (Andhra Pradesh), Nimuben Babhania  (Gujarat), Murli Dhar Mohol (Maharashtra), Pavitra Margherita (Assam) and Bandi Sanjay Kumar (Telangana).
