The votes are being counted today, Friday, after the polling on January 15 for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. According to the State Election Commission, the fate of 15,931 candidates contesting for 2,869 seats in 893 wards will be decided by evening. This time, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is at the center of attention, with about 52.94% voter turnout.

This election is also historic as Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have come together in the political arena after a long gap. Meanwhile, a direct 'Pawar vs. Pawar' showdown is unfolding in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The fierce contest between Mahayuti (BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP) and Maha Vikas Aghadi (Thackeray alliance and Congress) will also set the course for the upcoming assembly elections.

In Amravati, BJP is ahead in 2 seats, while in Akola, BJP leads in 7 and Congress in 2. Additionally, in Nanded, BJP is ahead in 5 and Shinde’s Sena in 2. In Nagpur, BJP leads in 13 seats while Congress follows with 3.

Thackeray vs. Mahayuti in Mumbai

For decades, Asia's wealthiest municipal corporation BMC has been dominated by Shiv Sena, but post-split, it's now a battle for credibility for Uddhav Thackeray. Exit polls predict an advantage for the BJP and Eknath Shinde alliance, with Uddhav and Raj Thackeray expected to secure 58 to 68 seats. Results from Mumbai's 227 wards might be delayed as the administration plans phased counting this time.
