MP News:
The Christian community is enraged following an attack on two priests in the Ranjhi police station premises in Jabalpur. The All India Christian Federation (AICF) warned that if the police fail to file an FIR against the right-wing activists responsible for this attack, which occurred three days ago, they will stage massive protests after Ram Navami.
The incident took place on March 31, when Father Davis George, Vicar General of the Jabalpur Catholic Diocese, and Father George Thomas, Secretary of the Diocese Corporation, were attacked at the Ranjhi police station. The attack targeted at least six individuals, including Father Davis, who is the former principal of St. Aloysius College and a recipient of three national awards.
Atul Joseph, Jabalpur district coordinator of the AICF, stated, "Three days have passed, yet no FIR has been filed. The attack happened during Lent and under police presence. We will not remain silent. A call for a shutdown in Jabalpur post-Ram Navami is possible."
Joseph explained that approximately 50 indigenous Christian pilgrims from Mandla district were brought to Ranjhi police station by right-wing activists, accusing them of conversion. Fathers Davis, Thomas, and Felix Barla, Secretary of St. Peter's and Paul's Cathedral, went to the station to assist, where they were met with shoving and slaps. A widely circulated video shows a woman slapping the priest. Later, the police dispersed the crowd and released the pilgrims and priests.
Ranjhi area's police officer Satish Kumar Sahu stated, "The investigation is ongoing. Victims' statements are being recorded, and an FIR will be filed soon." Father Davis was unavailable for comment as he is reported to be unwell.
Earlier on Tuesday, over 500 Christians staged a protest, submitting a memorandum to the District Collector. Protesters claimed the attack occurred as the priests attempted to aid detained indigenous Christians. Social media witnessed viral videos of community members in tears during the protests, including shared images of Father Davis with former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
The national body of bishops labeled the April 1 incident an "assault on religious freedom and human dignity," urging the central government to intervene. Arvind Andrews, president of the AICF, demanded strict action against the culprits. Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police Suryakant Sharma assured ongoing investigation and appropriate action.
