The Masnaa Crossing, an 8-kilometer stretch on the Lebanon-Syria border, stands as a crucial passage. Equipped with custom checkpoints, it was exploited by Hezbollah for arms trafficking. To curb this, Israel launched a missile assault here.
The road now lies fragmented. On one side lies Lebanon's Masnaa, while Syria's Jdeidat Yabus spans the other. Following Israel's airstrikes, the thoroughfare is now impassable. However, the crossing remains a lifeline for thousands fleeing daily.
Escaping Lebanon, thousands trek on foot to Syria. Israel's strikes on Hezbollah have prompted 310,000 displacements over ten days. A 700-meter stretch on Lebanon's side is left cratered and treacherous.
Challenges in Delivering Aid
Rescue and aid workers report complications due to Israel's attacks. Disruptions hinder both travel and vital aid delivery. UN World Food Programme Director, Matthew Hollingworth, emphasized that this was the most cost-effective way to deliver supplies to Lebanon, now cut off.
Israel claims Hezbollah leveraged this route for arms transfers. The border includes a 3.5-kilometer tunnel between Lebanon and Syria, also targeted by Israel. Strategic bunker-buster bombs were deployed to deter Hezbollah's armament deliveries, often smuggled alongside civilian and aid convoys.
Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health reported Israeli strikes on Thursday led to 37 fatalities, with aerial attacks wounding 151 individuals. Since October 2023, Israeli interventions have claimed 2,000 Lebanese lives. Israel further cautions residents in Nabatiah to evacuate to safer zones.
