Iran Launches Chamran-1 Satellite Amid Tensions with Israel

Amid ongoing tensions with Israel, Iran has successfully launched the Chamran-1 research satellite. This marks Iran's second launch this year. The satellite was launched using the Qaem-100 rocket and was developed by Iranian military scientists. It has been placed at an altitude of 550 km.

Iran's military, known as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), conducted its second satellite launch of the year on the morning of September 14, 2024. The satellite, called Chamran-1, is reportedly a research satellite, but in light of tensions with Israel, its deployment at an altitude of 550 km strengthens Iran's military capabilities.

The Chamran-1 satellite was launched using the Qaem-100 rocket and started transmitting signals back to Earth just hours after being placed in its designated orbit. Weighing 60 kilograms, the mission's goal is to test hardware and software systems in orbit and to perform maneuvering. Earlier in January, Iran launched the Sorayya satellite, placed at an orbit of 750 kilometers.

In the meantime, the United States has claimed that the rocket used by Iran for the satellite launch is, in fact, a long-range ballistic missile technology. The US argues that this could pose future threats to both space and global security, including potential nuclear attacks. Iran, however, dismisses these claims as unfounded.

Iran stated that their rocket and satellite use cold gas propulsion subsystems, which necessitate testing in space. They explained that this technology is used to validate navigation and altitude control subsystems in orbit.
