Modi's Electoral Present: DA Hike of 4%, Ongoing Subsidy on LPG Cylinders

In light of the impending elections and just before International Women's Day, the government has presented impoverished families with a substantial gift. The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of a $4 subsidy to consumers of the PM Ujjwala Yojana (PM Ujjwala Scheme) for the fiscal year 2024-25. The PM Ujjwala Yojana's (PM Ujjwala Scheme Subsidy) subsidy will now be provided until March 31, 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Ujjwala Scheme on May 1, 2016. Under this scheme, poor women receive free LPG gas connections (Free LPG Gas Connection). Once again, the Modi government has extended the $4 Ujjwala scheme subsidy for the next year. Women will continue to receive the Ujjwala Scheme subsidy benefits until March 31, 2025.

The government's financial burden

The government's decision will benefit 100 million families, putting an additional burden of 1.2 trillion rupees on the treasury. Notably, the final date for providing a $4 subsidy under the PM Ujjwala Yojana was March 31, 2024, which has now been extended by one year to March 31, 2025.

Increased Dearness Allowance for government employees

The central government has made a significant decision by increasing the dearness allowance (DA Hike) for government workers by 4 percent. The dearness allowance has now increased to 50 percent. Central employees and pensioners will receive dearness allowance (Dearness Allowance) and dearness relief (Dearness Relief) at 50 percent. This increase will take effect from January 1, 2024, benefiting millions of employees.
