Vinesh Phogat Petition Dismissed:

'Mom, I lost but won wrestling...' During the Paris Olympics, India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement with these words filled with disappointment. Why did she use such dispirited words? Her passion and dedication were overshadowed by rules, causing her to lose outside the ring in a legal battle.

In the ring, Vinesh defeated three star wrestlers in one day for a shot at gold during the Paris Olympics. She only needed to play the final match to clinch the gold. However, a wrestling rule stood between Vinesh and her gold medal, leading to her disqualification.

100 Grams Overweight Disqualified Vinesh

On August 6, at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh played three matches consecutively and secured a spot in the 50kg freestyle wrestling final, thereby guaranteeing a silver medal. However, the gold medal match was scheduled for the night of August 7. That morning, Vinesh was disqualified for being 100 grams over the 50kg category limit.

Following this, Vinesh appealed to the CAS, requesting permission to play the gold medal match, but this was immediately dismissed due to rules. Vinesh then appealed for the silver medal to be awarded to her for that event, but this appeal was also dismissed.

Defeated These 3 Giant Wrestlers in One Day

The first round was a tough challenge for Vinesh at the Paris Olympics, as her first match was against a Japanese wrestler who had won gold in the Tokyo Olympics without losing a single point. Vinesh faced the last Olympics winner and four-time World Champion, Yu Susaki.

Before facing Vinesh, Susaki had never lost an international match, having won 82 consecutive bouts. Vinesh defeated this formidable opponent 3-2. Susaki was no match for Vinesh on that day.

Vinesh's quarter-final match was against Ukraine’s top-ranked female wrestler, Oksana Livach. She won this match with a remarkable 7-5. That same day, Vinesh played her semi-final against Cuba's wrestler Yussnelis Guzmán. Despite toppling two wrestlers back-to-back, Vinesh’s determination was still high. She defeated Guzmán 5-0, securing her spot in the final.

Fans are asking what exactly happened overnight that led to Vinesh’s disqualification. They are curious about the rules that caused Vinesh to be disqualified. Let's explore these rules...

What Are the Weight Rules in Wrestling?

In wrestling, there are weight categories. Wrestlers must compete against someone in the same weight class. Vinesh was in the 50kg weight class, so both she and her opponent needed to be at or under 50kg. United World Wrestling (UWW) regulates these rules.

UWW Article 11 states that before entering the match, the team leader must provide the names of the 'final athletes' who will compete. This information must be submitted in advance. Athletes' weights are checked before each match, and this data must be submitted by the 12th hour of the day before the match. Matches do not occur between wrestlers of different weight categories.

What Clothes Are Worn During Weigh-Ins?

According to the rules, athletes who do not meet the weight requirements are disqualified from the competition. If an athlete fails to weigh in during either of the two scheduled times, they are disqualified and placed last without a rank.

During weigh-ins, competitors can only wear a 'singlet'. Their nails must be properly trimmed. Wrestlers can weigh in as many times as they want during the process.

Vinesh Presented These Four Arguments During the Hearing...

1. Vinesh argued that she did not cheat. 2. Her weight gain was due to the natural recovery process of the body. 3. She argued that taking care of her health was a fundamental right for any athlete. 4. She also argued that her weight was within the set limit on the first day of the competition, and the weight gain was a result of recovery, not cheating. It was her fundamental right to provide her body with the necessary nutrients for recovery.

Wrestler Vinesh Retired from Wrestling

On August 8, the day after the final, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling. In a social media post, she wrote, 'Mom, wrestling defeated me. I lost, forgive me. Your dream, my courage, everything broke. I can't continue anymore. Farewell wrestling 2001-2024.' She apologized and said that she would remain indebted to everyone forever.

Vinesh Has Won 3 Golds in the Commonwealth

Vinesh Phogat has won three consecutive gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, securing golds at the 2014 Glasgow, 2018 Gold Coast, and 2022 Birmingham Games. Additionally, she clinched a gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
