As the US gears up for presidential elections, the political arena is bustling with more than just policies – President Joe Biden's new shoes have stepped into the spotlight.
According to 'The Independent,' Biden was spotted last month sporting a pair of chunky-soled black sneakers with his blue suit as he stepped out of the White House.
Reports suggest these custom-designed sneakers are less prone to slipping, promising to reduce tumbles.
Speculations rise that Biden might have had a hand in their design following multiple instances where he's taken a spill, leading to critics often questioning his physical health.
What makes these sneakers unique?
An 'Inside Edition' report reveals Biden's sneakers, identified as Hoka Transport, are crafted by the brand Hoka known for its distinctive designs.
The Republican National Committee (RNC), spearheaded by former President Donald Trump, has released a report and a social media video on these sneakers, alleging that Biden's allies are coercing him into sporting these 'lifestyle sneakers' due to his frequent strolls.
These acclaimed 'stable' sneakers are marketed at around $150, promising greater support and walking comfort.
A user on social media endorsed them, saying, 'After injuring my foot, I turned to these sneakers. They are indeed spectacular.'
The company asserts that the Hoka sneakers are designed with user needs in mind, boasting a thicker and wider sole, providing more comfort and stability than other shoes.
Hoka, originally a French shoe company with a global headquarters in the US, manufactures its shoes in Vietnam and China. They claim their sneakers are so comfortable, it feels like walking on air.
Why debate over sneakers?
Biden first caught attention with these sneakers on February 19, leaving the White House. Only now has it sparked controversy, with opponents poking fun at them.
Republican Rep. Andy Ogles dubbed the sneakers 'Hoka JB46,' in accordance with Biden being the 46th president, and mockingly inquired if people often found themselves falling like the president.
Ogles even shared a satirical social media advert asking, 'Do you frequently fall just like the president? Introducing Hoka JB46.'
This isn't the first time Republican leaders have made fun of Biden, previously coining terms like 'Biden Blunders' and 'Sleepy Joe.'
But why exactly did Biden choose these sneakers?
The president occasionally stumbles or falls while walking. Just last month, a misstep on the Air Force One stairs could have led to a fall had Biden not grasped the handrail.
After a medical checkup, Biden was diagnosed with 'sensory peripheral neuropathy,' which can cause nerve damage in the feet.
Even The American Podiatric Association recognized the shoes' comfort for feet, and Biden now uses small stairs when boarding or alighting aircraft, always with a Secret Service agent by his side.
When exactly has Biden stumbled?
Biden has been captured faltering or slipping several times on camera. Shortly after the 2020 elections, he fractured his foot, claiming to have slipped after a shower, resulting in a prolonged period of wearing an orthopedic boot.
In December 2021, Biden staggered thrice during a meeting with Asian-American community leaders in Atlanta. The White House attributed it to strong winds affecting his balance.
During the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Biden slipped again, prompting White House staff to advise him on taking smaller steps. On multiple occasions, Biden has also been seen in tennis shoes.
