Political tensions escalate in Bangladesh. Following the death sentence given to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), her party, the Awami League, declared a nationwide protest on Tuesday. The party has dismissed the ICT's decision as illegal and is demanding the immediate resignation of interim government leader Muhammad Yunus, branding him an illegal occupier and killer-fascist.
The Awami League announced that by November 30, protests, rallies, and resistance marches will be organized in all districts and sub-districts.
Recently, the ICT sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in absentia. It is suspected that both are in India. In response, the Awami League has condemned this as a sham trial and launched a nationwide movement.
The party shared a statement on X, saying, “Demanding the resignation of the illegal occupier, killer-fascist Yunus, and rejecting the verdict of the unlawful ICT tribunal.”
In a message to their supporters, the Awami League expressed gratitude, saying, “You have witnessed how the fake court set up by the illegal occupier Yunus issued a verdict against the honorable Prime Minister and Awami League chairperson Sheikh Hasina. The public has outright rejected this phony verdict and protested wherever possible.”
The Awami League claims that the Yunus faction is conspiring to exclude Sheikh Hasina and her party from the upcoming elections. They stated, “The entire trial is a drama orchestrated by those hungry for power. We are not only dismissing this illegal verdict but are also engaging with political parties, various segments of society, and local leaders to thwart these conspiracies on the ground.”
The Awami League warned that a harsh movement will be declared for the country's defense. Other than the pro-liberation forces Awami League and Sheikh Hasina, no ‘stage-managed election’ will be allowed in Bangladesh. This will be stopped at any cost.”
On the other hand, interim government leader Muhammad Yunus has taken diplomatic steps by sending an official letter to India, seeking the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, to facilitate further actions following the ICT's ruling.
