In Madhyamgram, West Bengal, a local TMC leader's house was attacked by villagers on Saturday midnight. This followed allegations that the leader tried to shield an individual accused of sexually harassing a seven-year-old girl. When news of the incident surfaced in Rohanda Panchayat's Rajbari area, locals were enraged and began vandalizing shops owned by the accused.
Crowd Anger Erupts at TMC Leader's House
Police from the Madhyamgram station quickly arrived on the scene. Villagers, chanting 'We want justice,' continued their rampage, even in front of the police. The crowd didn’t stop there; they also vandalized the house of the Panchayat member of the area.
Villagers alleged that the Panchayat member's husband attempted to protect the accused. This sparked outrage that led to the attack on the TMC leader’s house. Additional police forces rushed to the area and managed to bring the situation under control.
The Accused Runs a Grocery Shop
The police resorted to a baton charge and fired tear gas to manage the situation. The accused, identified as Rauf, who runs a grocery shop, has been arrested by Madhyamgram police and will be presented in court. The local Panchayat member’s husband is also in police custody.
Two Arrested in Connection with the Case
The police have arrested Abul Hafiz, the husband of the TMC Panchayat member, on charges of attempting to shield the accused. Sources suggest that Hafiz tried to cover up the crime and dissuade the victim's family from filing a police report. In total, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
