A major tragedy has struck Wayanad, Kerala amidst heavy rainfall. So far, 54 lives have been lost in the late-night landslide, with the death toll rising hourly. Over 100 people have been reported injured. Rescue operations are ongoing in Wayanad. Several homes in Meppadi, Mundakkal, and Chooralmala were buried under debris due to the landslide. The situation is so dire that army personnel had to be deployed for rescue efforts, along with the Navy.

In the images, you can see the bodies being retrieved. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda, have expressed deep condolences. PM Modi announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs for families of those who lost their lives and Rs. 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the rescue operations in Wayanad are progressing rapidly, with all agencies working in tandem. The central government claimed that PM Modi is personally keeping an eye on the situation since morning. Kerala BJP President K Surendran, who had been a candidate from Wayanad, also rushed to the site.

Given the severity of the disaster, the army requested to assist in the rescue operation, subsequently deploying four units. This includes two companies from the 122 Infantry Battalion and two from the DSC Centre in Kannur. The total number of army personnel involved in the rescue mission is around 225, including medical staff.

Among the dead and injured are several children. According to the CMO, the landslide occurred after heavy rainfall in Wayanad. The National Health Mission has established a control room for emergency assistance, and helplines at 9656938689 and 8086010833 have been issued. Two Air Force Mi-17 helicopters and an ALH are scheduled to depart at 7:30 AM from Sulur, Tamil Nadu.

The rescue operation in Chooralmala, Wayanad, involves 250 members from the Fire and Rescue Services, Civil Defence, NDRF, and local emergency response teams. An additional NDRF team has been directed to the site immediately. The state government has issued a red alert for five districts: Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram.

The CMO issued a statement that, given the landslide situation, only essential vehicles are allowed through the Thamarassery Ghat pass. All efforts are being made to keep the pass clear of traffic jams to ensure that rescue materials reach Mundakkal.
