Known not just for his Congress affiliation, Kerala's MP Shashi Tharoor is adored by India's upper middle class for his charismatic personality, exceptional grasp of the English language, renowned books, and expertise in foreign policy. However, his occasional praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has distanced him from his party, now only a nominal member, rarely invited to crucial party events. Despite this internal friction, he enjoys widespread popularity among Modi's supporters. Following Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation, discussions about Tharoor potentially becoming the Vice President ignited on social media, leaving political observers perplexed at how his name emerged so unexpectedly.

Where Did Shashi Tharoor's Name Emerge From?

This year, despite not being recommended by Congress, Tharoor was chosen by the central government to lead a bipartisan delegation representing India post Operation Sindoor, utilizing his foreign policy acumen in the US. His previous praise for Modi's foreign policy might have led Congress to withhold his name. BJP leader Amit Malviya highlighted this as a weakness of Congress and Rahul Gandhi. Consequently, the speculation that Tharoor might be used by BJP to outmaneuver the opposition grew.

Tharoor, in a Malayalam podcast in 2024, mentioned alternatives if Congress doesn't utilize his services, sparking continuous speculation about his potential alliance with BJP or acceptance of a constitutional role.

Post Dhankhar's resignation, a senior journalist known for connections with the Modi government tweeted suggesting Tharoor or two central ministers as potential replacements, garnering widespread support for Tharoor. Many believe he could become the best Vice President for the country.

Will Shashi Tharoor Accept This Position?

Whenever asked about joining BJP, Tharoor consistently affirms his commitment to Congress, denying any intentions of joining BJP. In 2024, he clarified his priority remains national interest and Congress ideology.

Yet, post Operation Sindoor, Tharoor's many critical articles about Congress suggest his days with the party might be numbered. Senior Congress leaders frequently criticize him, adding to the perception of an inevitable departure.

It often seems, if BJP offers him the Vice President position, Tharoor might consider it. However, those familiar with him know his aspiration is to run as Chief Minister of Kerala, an unlikely feat with Congress. BJP candidacy in Kerala might also be futile as BJP's chances to secure a Chief Minister position there remain slim. Therefore, logically, should he be proposed for Vice President, Tharoor might agree. Yet, will BJP risk another outsider in a constitutional role?

Will Modi's Government Nominate Tharoor?

The Bharatiya Janata Party enjoys significant approval from urban middle-class elites, who would welcome Tharoor's candidacy. Nationwide, Tharoor could boost support for BJP, and propel the South Mission further. However, Tharoor's liberal, secular, and global perspective contrasts with BJP's Hindutva-centered ideology. Known for independent thinking, as Vice President, Tharoor might struggle to align with BJP expectations, raising doubts.

His appointment could disturb BJP's staunch supporters, especially the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), due to his criticism of the Hindu nation concept and communal agenda.

As Vice President, Tharoor would need to demonstrate impartiality while presiding over the Rajya Sabha. Yet, the Modi government would desire clear support on various issues, where Tharoor's Congress background might pose dilemmas. Historically, such impartiality has been consequential, as seen with Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation partially due to misunderstandings with government intentions over Justice Yashwant Verma's impeachment issue.
