The uproar continues over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical Hospital. Amid widespread outrage across the country over the incident, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has joined President Droupadi Murmu in condemning the act.
Vice President Dhankhar asserted that a society where women and girls feel unsafe is far from civilized. Such incidents tarnish democracy and hinder our progress. The pervasive fear among women is a significant national concern.
Addressing a program at Delhi University's Bharati College, the Vice President remarked that we stand at a crossroads today. The President has also stated that enough is enough. There needs to be a thorough review of such incidents, and zero tolerance towards these crimes is imperative.
President Murmu Also Voices Discontent
Previously, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her frustration over the Kolkata incident, declaring that enough is enough. She stated her disappointment and fear over the entire event. Such crimes against daughters are unacceptable.
She remarked that the increasing number of crimes against women in the country is alarming, stating that no civilized society can tolerate such atrocities against its daughters and sisters. In Kolkata, students, doctors, and citizens were protesting the incident while the perpetrators roamed free. It’s time for society to be honest and introspective.
What is the Kolkata Rape and Murder Case?
On August 9, the body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata. Her clothes were missing, she was bleeding, and her body bore signs of injuries. This incident fueled anger among the resident doctors, leading them to go on strike. The police arrested the accused, Sanjay Roy. As the case gained attention, the High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Later, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and ordered the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation. Subsequently, the CBI filed a status report in court.
