The clash between Russia and the US has once again unfolded prominently. In the North Atlantic Ocean, the British forces have given complete military support to the US in the seizure of the Russian-flagged oil tanker Bella 1. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that this cooperation was conducted at America’s request within the framework of international law.
According to the British Ministry of Defence, UK Armed Forces provided predetermined operational support upon the US request. This included providing basing facilities, surveillance, and logistical aid for US military resources. The UK’s Royal Navy ship RFA Tideforce supported the US forces, while the RAF played an essential role in aerial surveillance operations.
The Tanker Halted Between Scotland and Iceland
According to the United States European Command, the Russian-flagged tanker was intercepted in international waters between Scotland and Iceland. The ship had previously been on the radar of US agencies due to alleged illegal activities linked to Venezuela. After weeks of pursuit, the US Coast Guard successfully intercepted the vessel.
Russia Strikes Back, Labels the Act 'Maritime Piracy'
Following the US operation, Moscow responded with intense criticism. Russia's Ministry of Transport stated that no nation has the right to exert force on a vessel duly registered by another country. Russian leaders have deemed this act a violation of international maritime law and straightforward 'piracy.'
Two Million Barrels of Oil, Venezuelan Connection
According to a data analytics firm, one of the seized Russian tankers was loaded with approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil, allegedly connected to Venezuela. The White House claims these tankers were engaged in illegal activities, violating US sanctions.
Possible Legal Action Against the Crew
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt hinted that the crew of the seized ship might face legal proceedings under US law and could be brought to the United States if necessary. The US claims there was a pre-existing federal judicial order authorizing the action.
