An Indian truck driver has been detained following a severe road accident in the state of Indiana. Allegations suggest that the truck driver ran a red light, causing a collision involving three vehicles that resulted in the tragic death of a 64-year-old man. The driver’s identity has been revealed as Sukhdeep Singh. This unfortunate event took place on February 18 at a rural intersection west of Indianapolis in Hendricks County.
According to local media reports, a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling east failed to stop at a red light at the junction of US 36 and County Road 525 East, colliding with a Chevrolet pickup heading north. The collision triggered a chain reaction among three vehicles.
The Hendricks County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Indiana State Police have taken truck driver Sukhdeep Singh into custody for federal immigration authorities. Television footage from the scene depicted law enforcement officers handcuffing an individual near the damaged truck.

Reports state that Sukhdeep Singh was issued a Commercial Driving License (CDL) in Indiana in May 2025. It remains unclear if alcohol or narcotics played a role in the accident. Investigative agencies are examining vehicle data, brake marks, and traffic signal timings.
Some local media reports claim that he was intercepted at the border in 2018 and later released. At that time, he was reportedly a minor.
Increased Scrutiny on Foreign Drivers
This incident occurs amid increased scrutiny of foreign-born truck drivers in the US, particularly those of Indian origin. Recent fatal accidents in Indiana and other states have sparked questions about the issuance process of commercial licenses to non-citizen drivers.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has linked this case to safety concerns involving non-citizen drivers. In a statement to Fox News, the department stated, 'It is extremely dangerous for unauthorized immigrants to operate semi-trucks on America's roads, especially if they lack sufficient traffic law knowledge or English proficiency.'
Previous Incidents
In a recent incident in Oregon, an Indian national faced murder charges following a semi-truck crash that killed two people. Officials alleged that he unlawfully entered the US and subsequently obtained a commercial license. In Florida, debate intensified after an alleged illegal U-turn by an Indian truck driver resulted in three fatalities.
