President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that ongoing discussions to end the conflict in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas are advancing rapidly. He also indicated that the initial phase of the Gaza peace agreement might be completed this week. Trump's remarks were made just hours after he warned that if Hamas fails to relinquish power and control in Gaza as per his peace plan, they would face severe consequences.

On his social media platform, 'Truth Social,' Trump shared an update stating that positive discussions took place over the weekend with Hamas and countries globally, including Arab and Muslim nations. He noted that these talks are part of a broader effort to end the Gaza conflict and achieve lasting peace in the Middle East. Trump urged, 'I'm informed that the first phase of the peace agreement should be concluded this week, and I'm encouraging everyone to progress swiftly on this matter.' The President reiterated his warning to Hamas that any delay in implementing this agreement would lead to more bloodshed, something no one desires.

Hamas Delegation Arrives in Egypt for Negotiations

Meanwhile, a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, the exiled Gaza leader, arrived in Egypt late Sunday to participate in discussions in Sharm El-Sheikh related to implementing the Gaza peace accord. An Israeli delegation, led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, is expected to arrive in Egypt today for negotiations on the US-backed peace initiative. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the coming days would be decisive in determining Hamas's commitment to the first phase of this peace agenda.

According to officials familiar with the negotiations, the initial phase of Trump's proposed 20-point peace plan focuses on the release of 48 remaining hostages in Gaza (20 of whom are believed to be alive while the bodies of the other 28 are expected to be returned). In exchange, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners from its jails. Notably, during an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Hamas had kidnapped over 300 Israeli citizens.
