US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed hope that the ongoing ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas would soon be resolved. Speaking to journalists, he stated, 'We are engaged in discussions and expect a resolution by next week.'
The United States endorses a 60-day ceasefire plan, aiming for the sequential release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli forces from certain areas in Gaza, and negotiations to end the hostilities. Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, also conveyed an 'optimistic' outlook for the Gaza ceasefire discussions.
Witkoff told reporters in Teterboro, New Jersey, that he plans to meet with senior Qatari officials during the FIFA Club World Cup Final. Despite slow progress, disagreements persist between Israel and Hamas over the extent of Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.
An Israeli official indicated that while talks continue, they blame Hamas for the sluggish pace, describing them as 'unyielding' and unwilling to compromise. On the other hand, Hamas argues that Israel's terms are the primary obstacle.
According to Reuters, Hamas has rejected Israel's proposal to maintain control over approximately 40% of Gaza, including southern Rafah and northern and eastern regions. Hamas insists on reverting to the ceasefire boundaries established before March.
