President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday, announcing that the two leaders would meet following Canada’s upcoming election. Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, "It was an extremely good conversation. We agree on many issues and will meet immediately after Canada's upcoming election to work on politics, trade, and other relevant factors."
He also mentioned that this cooperation would be beneficial for both the U.S. and Canada.
At this time, there has been no official response from Carney or his office regarding the conversation. This dialogue occurred amidst Carney's commitment to reduce Canada's economic dependence on the U.S., while Trump prepares to announce potential new tariffs on April 2.
It's noteworthy that the U.S. and Canada have been close allies and trade partners for a long time, but tensions have emerged since Trump entered office. Trump has not only threatened new tariffs but has also jested about making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada's Prime Minister in mid-March and has scheduled mid-term elections in the country for April 28.
