The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, previously in news due to the rape-murder of a trainee doctor, has once again become the center of controversy. This time, the hospital's doctors are accused of delaying the treatment of a young man. 28-year-old Bikram Bhattacharjee from Konnagar in Hooghly district was crushed by a truck on Friday afternoon. He was declared dead upon arrival at RG Kar Medical College.
The uproar erupted after Bikram's death. His mother, Kabita, alleged that there were no doctors available in the emergency room, causing delays that led to his death. According to Kabita, a lot of time was wasted, and the surgery that should have been completed in that span was delayed because no doctors were available, not even an emergency doctor.
Hospital's Clarification
Bikram was brought to RG Kar Hospital around 12:40 PM on Friday. However, RG Kar officials have denied the family's claims. They stated that Bikram was immediately taken to trauma care upon arrival. He had severe injuries in two organs and also sustained a serious head injury. He was taken for a CT scan. While plans were being made for the CT scan, Bikram experienced breathing difficulties and eventually passed away.
Statement from Abhishek Banerjee
Abhishek Banerjee commented on the incident, saying, 'A young boy from Konnagar lost his life in a road accident today. He was left untreated for 3 hours during which he bled out. This is a result of the doctors' protests at RG Kar.'
Negligence Leading to Death is Unjust!
He further stated, 'The demands of the junior doctors are both reasonable and legitimate. I urge them to protest in a manner that doesn’t disrupt essential medical services. Deaths caused by preventable negligence are akin to culpable homicide. If protests are to continue, they should be done constructively, with empathy and humanity, ensuring no lives are at risk due to inaction or neglect.'
