The Central Government is set to launch the 'Umeed' portal on June 6, aiming to ensure improved management and increased transparency of Waqf properties nationwide. According to sources, this portal stands for 'Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development,' designed to register all Waqf properties on a centralized platform.

Under the scheme, registration of all Waqf properties will be mandatory within six months of the portal's launch. Detailed information on properties, including their length, width, and geo-tagged locations, will be required. Furthermore, properties registered under women's names will not be declared Waqf. Women, children, and economically weaker sections will become the principal beneficiaries of Waqf properties.

State Waqf Boards Responsible for Registration

The respective State Waqf Boards will handle the registration. If a property is not registered within the stipulated time due to technical or other significant reasons, an extension of one to two months may be given. However, properties still unregistered after the designated period will be deemed disputed and sent to the Waqf Tribunal.

The "Umeed" portal is being launched in the context of the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was approved by President Droupadi Murmu on April 5. The bill was passed after intense debates in both houses of Parliament.

Petitions Against the New Waqf Law Pending in Supreme Court

Meanwhile, several petitions challenging the Waqf Act are pending in the Supreme Court. The Central Government has urged the dismissal of these petitions, claiming that the law does not violate constitutional rights.
