The year 2025 is drawing to a close, yet the conflict that began in 2022 between Russia and Ukraine shows no sign of abating. Despite multiple rounds of talks among top leaders, the situation remains unchanged. On one hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. On the other hand, Russia continues its relentless attack on Ukraine. This assault functions as a display of power ahead of the upcoming meeting.
Russia has launched a significant attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, using hundreds of drones and missiles. This strike has wrought havoc in Kyiv, resulting in widespread electricity and heating outages in various parts of the city. Reports indicate that the attack lasted approximately 10 hours, with Russian forces employing nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles.
According to local officials, the assault resulted in one death and injured 19 people, including two children. The damage was severe enough to heavily impact several residential buildings. Rescuers are currently engaged in locating people trapped under the debris.
Power and Heating Crisis
Ukraine's Foreign Minister stated that due to the attack, heating has stopped in one-third of Kyiv, despite temperatures hovering around zero degrees. More than 320,000 homes in the capital are experiencing electricity disruptions.
The repercussions of this assault have extended to other nations as well. Poland, bordering Ukraine, temporarily closed several airports.
Peace Talks and Diplomatic Hurdles
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia has become agitated by the ongoing peace talks with the United States, prompting its aggressive actions. According to him, a proposed 20-point draft is about 90% ready, yet regional issues remain the most significant obstacles.
