Currently, Bangladesh is engulfed in the flames of communal unrest. A continuous series of attacks on Hindus have been rampant. Amidst this turmoil, America has issued a significant statement, pointing out that the Biden administration has not directed sufficient attention towards Bangladesh. However, the return of Trump to the White House is imminent.
Johnny Moore, the former commissioner of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), remarked that the Biden administration's focus on Bangladesh has been lacking. This situation poses a threat not only to the minorities in Bangladesh but also to the nation's very existence. Nevertheless, Trump is on his way.
He mentioned that Donald Trump is poised to take office again with an exceptional team. His team is an advocate for American values and views India as an ally.
Moore expressed his astonishment at the current American government's limited attention to Bangladesh. Yet, the fact remains that a new government with an unparalleled foreign policy is about to take charge in the U.S. I can assure you that Trump is returning to the White House, and his value-driven team will forge a path towards a better future. This team sees India as a crucial partner during these globally tumultuous times, with over 50 conflicts raging worldwide.
Moore was questioned about the US stance on the violence against minorities in Bangladesh and how a Trump administration would differ in approach compared to Biden's. He responded that there is no global challenge that cannot be resolved.
He assured that during Trump's last tenure, religious freedom was a top priority in human rights and was central to their foreign policy. This time, expect similar prioritization. An unprecedented collaboration between the U.S. and India can be anticipated.
Notably, Hindu religious leader Chinmay Krishna Das was arrested on charges of sedition on November 25. The Bangladesh court refused him bail, resulting in his sentencing to jail. Subsequently, his supporters took to the streets, initiating fervent protests.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also issued a statement expressing grave concern over the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmay Krishna Das in Bangladesh. This case surfaced amid increasing targeting of Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. There have been numerous reports of arson and looting of minority homes and businesses, along with theft, vandalism, and desecration of Hindu temples.
