When President Donald Trump imposed a strict 50% tariff on India, it sparked widespread criticism within the U.S. However, Trump's recent shift in tone signifies warming relations with India, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a friend. Trump has announced the resumption of trade talks with India, a move welcomed across America. Renowned American singer Mary Millben remarked, 'This is how friends communicate.'

On Tuesday, Trump declared the reopening of trade negotiations with India. He described this action as part of efforts to overcome obstacles and reach a successful agreement between the two nations.

Reacting to the announcement, Millben wrote on Ex, 'Friends speak with mutual respect, understanding, and common goals. This is the President Trump and Prime Minister Modi I recognize. We need each other and are stronger together. Our alliance serves as a moral and economic guide for the world, showing the path to peace.'

The American singer's response came after Trump's Truth Social post, where he expressed his eagerness to speak with his 'very good friend,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the coming weeks.

Trump wrote, 'I'm pleased to announce that the U.S. and India continue discussions aimed at resolving trade challenges. I look forward to speaking with my good friend, Prime Minister Modi, soon.'

Prime Minister Modi also welcomed Trump's announcement, stating that the trade talks would help unlock the limitless potential of the India-U.S. partnership.

In a post on Ex, the Prime Minister stated, 'India and the U.S. are close friends and natural partners. I'm confident that our trade dialogue will uncover the infinite possibilities of our partnership. Our teams are working to complete these discussions quickly. I am eager to speak with President Trump. Together, we'll ensure a brighter, more prosperous future for our nations.'

Previously, Trump had imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods imported to the U.S., later adding another 25% due to India's purchase of Russian oil. The 50% tariff on India became effective on August 27. The U.S. claimed that by purchasing Russian oil, India indirectly financed Russia's war in Ukraine.

Last month, Millben publicly expressed concerns over increased tariffs on India, warning that the 'tense war of words' between Trump and Prime Minister Modi was troubling both sides and harming small businesses in India and the U.S.

She emphasized, 'I'll reiterate—America needs India and vice versa. Any policy straining our strategic alliance is misguided. This tariff dispute, leading to tense talks between my esteemed leaders President Trump and PM Modi, concerns us all.'

She further noted, 'Countless small businesses in America and India are suffering due to this tariff tug-of-war. I communicate with them daily. Remember, we need each other. Converse like true friends. Find common ground. The legacy of our nations depends on this moment.'

Millben first met Prime Minister Modi during his state visit to the U.S. in June 2023. She performed India's national anthem at his welcome event in Washington's Ronald Reagan Building. After the performance, she famously touched Prime Minister Modi's feet for his blessings, a gesture widely covered by the media.
