The announcement by incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has alarmed three countries. China, Mexico, and Canada are all anxious about the imposition of substantial tariffs. In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces criticism from his former allies. Consequently, Trudeau convened a meeting with the leaders of different Canadian provinces. During this meeting, Trudeau stressed the importance of standing united against Trump's tariff threats.
Trudeau discussed U.S. relations with the premiers of 10 provinces. The meeting highlighted that Trudeau's Liberal government has four years of experience dealing with the Trump administration. He stated, 'This is a relationship that we know requires some degree of effort, and we are committed to doing just that. The most crucial aspect is that we all work together on this.'
Adverse Impact on Canada’s Economy
On November 25, Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico unless they curb drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and the inflow of migrants. Such tariffs could gravely impact Canada’s economy, which sends 75% of its export goods to the United States.
Crime Rates Soaring in the U.S.
Trump believes that thousands of people are entering the U.S. from the Mexico and Canada borders. With crime rates currently high in America, Trump has stated that one of his directives will be to impose a 25% tariff on all products imported from Mexico and Canada from January 20.
