Sidhu Moosewala had a great love for street food and fast food. On that fateful evening, May 29 last year, he stepped out for some golgappas. He assured his companions, Sukhpal Singh and others, that he would return in a while... little did anyone know, he was on his Last Ride.

A year after the murder, when the aajtak.in team traveled 350 kilometers from Delhi to the village of Moosa in Punjab, they met two eyewitnesses. First was Sukhpal Singh, associated with the family's care, and second was Gurpreet Singh, also known as Pinka. Along with the entire village, they too have not been able to forget that dreadful day.

While wandering around the garage at Sidhu's home, we met Sukhpal Singh. With a face marked by sadness and shoulders heavy with responsibilities, this man has taken upon himself the full responsibility of Moosewala's elderly parents and their affairs.

Remembering the evening of May 29, Sukhpal Singh says... “I met Moosewala at the garage gate of the house. He was going somewhere in a Thar. When I signaled asking where, he gestured from the car – for golgappas.”

I asked where the gunman (security guard) was. He lifted his pistol and showed me, indicating the weapon was with him.

Just as I reached home and picked up a glass of water, I received a call from an acquaintance in Jawaharke village that Sidhu was fired upon there.

The glass slipped from my hand, and I hurriedly called Mataji (Sidhu's mother) to inform her about the shooting. She asked me to come quickly. I rushed out of the house. Meanwhile, Mataji, sitting on a motorcycle with someone else, had already reached the scene.

Sukhpal further narrates that he reached the hospital where Sidhu was declared dead.

We had many questions about the May 29 murder case. One was why Sidhu, who had a bulletproof car, went in the Thar and didn't take a bodyguard. Sukhpal explained, “The Thar wasn’t Sidhu Moosewala's. It was a car that was brought for washing. Sidhu admired it, found it beautiful, and the owner, who was a Sidhu fan, lent it to him for a few days.”

Sidhu liked the Thar so much that he began using it instead of his bulletproof vehicle around the village and surrounding areas. Sukhpal mentioned that on the day of the murder, one bodyguard was unwell, and Sidhu didn’t take the other because there was little space in the Thar.

Life without Moosewala for his parents is extremely hard. Sukhpal, becoming emotional, shares that the parents cry six to seven times a day. If any of Moosewala’s videos suddenly appear on social media, they burst into tears.

During our conversation, Sukhpal mentioned Sidhu’s two friends who were with him in the Thar during the murder. Their names were Gurpreet and Gurvinder. Sukhpal says Gurpreet and Gurvinder have been Sidhu's childhood friends. Neither knew how to operate a firearm. Had they managed to fire Sidhu’s weapon, even intermittently, the assailants might not have dared to come close.

After meeting Sukhpal, we approached Gurpreet Singh. He resides a bit ahead of Sidhu's old house in Moosa village. For security reasons, the Punjab government has assigned a gunman to him as well.

Upon seeing Gurpreet Singh in a T-shirt, our eyes immediately noticed a prominent scar near his elbow on his left hand. Upon inquiry, we learned this wound was from an AK-47 fired by Moosewala’s killers.

Where was Sidhu going that day? Gurpreet Singh mentioned there was no elaborate plan. Sidhu often went for golgappas and fast food, and that day was no different. At the bus stand, Sidhu remarked they would also drop by his aunt’s place nearby.

Hearing this, Gurpreet advised Sidhu they should use the bulletproof car or have the gunman with them. Sidhu, however, said that they would be quick, and nothing would happen.

Gurpreet recounted noticing a car seemingly following them but then changing route. Sidhu dismissed it as a fan trying to click photos.

Yet, at two or three turns, the car reappeared behind them, raising suspicion. They told Sidhu to speed up. Soon, a car overtook them. Spotting the assailants' guns, Sidhu fired his pistol immediately. Sidhu's first shot was in self-defense, triggering a minute-long gunfire exchange.

According to Gurpreet, Sidhu fired seven shots. After about half a minute of shooting, the assailants fled. For a brief time, no one came around, but eventually, people gathered. By the time help arrived, Sidhu had passed away. The police then took the three to the hospital.

Gurpreet and Gurvinder escaped with their lives, but questions arose about their survival in such deadly fire. People speculated their involvement in the murder. Responding to this, Gurpreet explained that despite such accusations, Sidhu’s family stood by them, never suspecting their involvement.

May 29, 2022, marked the dreadful murder of famed Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. His vehicle was surrounded, and shooters unleashed a torrent of bullets believed to be from Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar's gang.

One can only imagine the horror of the crime when post-mortem reports revealed 24 bullet marks on Sidhu’s body. Evidently, the murderers intended to ensure Moosewala wouldn't survive. The terror of those gunshots lingers in the faces of the locals.

Discussing the case, Moosewala’s lawyer Satyenderpal Singh Mittal and his uncle Chamakour Sidhu accused the government of not being serious about this high-profile case. They asserted that only bringing Goldy Brar to India could solve the case entirely.

Chamakour Sidhu further clarified that Moosewala’s name was unfairly linked to Vicky Middukheda’s murder case, with which Moosewala had no connection. He emphasized Shagunpreet was never Sidhu’s manager.
