Star Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury during the Sydney ODI against Australia. He made a diving catch to dismiss Australia's wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey, but landed awkwardly, leading to a severe abdominal injury. His spleen was lacerated, causing internal bleeding, which necessitated his hospitalization in Sydney, including a few days in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).
In the latest update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it was confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the hospital but will remain in Sydney for now. His recovery is progressing excellently. The BCCI expressed gratitude to the doctors who played a crucial role in his treatment.
As per the BCCI's statement, 'On October 25, 2025, while fielding during the third ODI against Australia, Shreyas Iyer sustained a severe abdominal injury, leading to a spleen injury and internal bleeding. The injury was quickly recognized and treated with a minor surgery to cease the bleeding entirely. Adequate medical management has been ensured.'
Reasons for Extended Stay in Sydney
The BCCI further stated, 'Shreyas Iyer's condition is now stable, and his health is improving well. The BCCI medical team is pleased with his recovery and discharged him from the hospital on Saturday, October 1. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Dr. Kourosh Haghighi and his team, as well as Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in Sydney, for providing the best possible treatment for Shreyas. He will remain in Sydney for further advisory and will return to India once fit for air travel.'
Shreyas Iyer was not picked for the ongoing five-match T20 series against Australia. Due to this injury, he is unlikely to return to the field soon, possibly missing the ODI series against South Africa starting November 30.
