Veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor remarked that his praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States was rooted in national interest, not party politics. According to Tharoor, the meeting between PM Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump yielded significant outcomes benefiting the people of India. ‘I regard some of these achievements as positive steps as an Indian,’ he stated. ‘My remarks have been in support of national interest.’

Tharoor continued to argue that we must not always focus solely on party interests. ‘I am not a party spokesperson,’ he pointed out. ‘I speak as an elected Member of Parliament chosen by the people of Thiruvananthapuram, and in this capacity, I am a crucial stakeholder in Indian democracy. If the government performs well, it deserves applause; if it errs, it warrants criticism. Democracy must have room for both constructive criticism and recognition.’

Recently, Shashi Tharoor commended PM Modi’s U.S. trip, stating that several pressing issues were effectively addressed. ‘I believe the outcomes are excellent,’ he shared. He also warned that hasty decisions could have impacted exports negatively. ‘Post-visit, there is now ample time for discussions and agreements, which is a positive outcome.’

Tharoor emphasized the necessity for transparency in discussions on diplomatic issues. Nevertheless, significant unresolved matters, like the return of illegal immigrants, remain. He advocated for a healthy dialogue between the government and opposition, cautioning against either side presuming the other is always incorrect. ‘Dialogue, consensus, and criticism are all essential components of a democratic society,’ he concluded.
